Boy, 5, shoots himself in head, parents charged

May 4, 2008

The parents of a 5-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself in the head with a gun inside his residence were charged early Sunday.

The boy was critically wounded after being shot in the head at 5:42 p.m. Saturday in the 6100 block of South Wabash Avenue, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said. The boy was taken to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition.

The child’s parents were both charged in connection with the shooting, according to police News Affairs.

The father, Cortney Rodgers, 26, was charged with one count each of endangering the life and health of a child, possessing a firearm without a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification Card (FOID) and failing to register a firearm.

The mother, Dorothy Hayden, 27, was charged with one count of endangering the life and health of a child.

All the charges are misdemeanors.

Both parents are scheduled to appear in court May 19.

If this doesn't scream gun control I don't know what does?! First of all who allows their child to play with guns?! And even if they didn't let him should it not have been in a safe or somewhere protected? I feel like this is a really touchy area because on one hand you want to protect your family and your house. But on the other hand you are then putting your family at risk if something like this were to happen. It's a slipper slope but I feel that these things need to be taken care of and gun control should be tighter.

I saw this and was going to post it, too. If you are going to have a gun, it should be the most secure, hidden, triple-locked item in the house. Futhermore, where were the parents when this happened? Who was watching him? I think the parents should get charged for more than misdemeanors.

I agree with Sammi, I think a tighter restriction on guns is definitely in order. Also, these parents are total morons if they keep a gun in their house without locking it up when there is a 5-year-old walking around. Young children are curious, so these parents definitely need to be held accountable for not locking the gun up.

The fact that the parents allowed a 5 year old to even find the gun shows how stupid they were. From this event we should be able to conclude that one they do not no gun safety and two they are not ready to raise a child. However, I feel bad for the parents that their child shot themself by accident. They will never live this down and will always be reminded there whole lives.
