Bicyclist killed by hit-and-run

A man was struck and killed by a hit-and-run vehicle while riding his bicycle Thursday night in far north suburban Winthrop Harbor, police said. The victim, a man in his 50s, was riding north on his bicycle on the far right side of Sheridan Road when a sport-utility vehicle struck him from behind, Willets said. The bicyclist was taken to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, where he was pronounced dead shortly after the crash, Willets said. His identity was not being released early Friday pending the notification of family.
Willets said the SUV was last seen heading north on Sheridan Road from the scene. Witnesses could only describe it as dark blue or black, and police believe the vehicle sustained damage to the passenger side corner panel and headlight, Willets said.Police had no information on the vehicle's license plate and could not say how many occupants there were at the time.Anyone with information can call police at 847-872-2131

This is absolutely terrible. How can someone live with themselves knowing they hit someone on then left them to die? There are so many careless drives on the roads! This has been the second person to die in the last week in the Chicagoland area from a bicycle-car accident. I feel for the families of the victims. These stories of bicycle deaths really hit home for me because that is how my uncle died, just 3 years ago. Lets watch out for bicyclist while driving and drive more respectively and carefully. Hopefully the person responsible will come forward and take responsibility for his or her actions.

Berwyn boy, 14, convicted in fatal stabbing of classmate

A 14-year-old boy was convicted Thursday of first-degree murder for stabbing a classmate as they walked home from a Berwyn middle school in February 2007, according to the Cook County state's attorney's office.

Circuit Judge Edward Pietrucha found the boy guilty of stabbing Ricardo Hernandez, 13, near 31st Street and Euclid Avenue as the boys were returning from Heritage Middle School, said Assistant State's Atty. John Somerville. Hernandez of Berwyn died at the University of Illinois Medical Center, Somerville said. School officials told police the boys had a lunchtime altercation.

Pietrucha will sentence the boy June 4 to between 20 and 60 years in adult detention. The boy would serve the adult sentence if he violates any law while in juvenile detention until age 21.

A 3-year-old boy was wounded on Chicago's South Side Monday night.

By John Garcia
CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 3-year-old boy was wounded on Chicago's South Side Monday night.
He was with his mother when shots were fired. He was hit in the shoulder.
He was shot just after 6 p.m. near 77th and May in Chicago's Gresham neighborhood.
The bullet entered near his shoulder and exited without causing any major damage. But the police say this is another example of the random violence that continues to plague the city. Police say 3-year-old Marshaun Williams was standing outside with his parents when gunfire erupted. Witnesses said they heard as many as a dozen shots. One struck the boy near the shoulder blade.
"The children were out playing on a hot day. The mom was out here, too. All of a sudden gunfire erupted," said Andrew Holmes, family friend.
Chicago police performed roll call in the neighborhood shortly after the shooting, sending a message they plan to crackdown on such violence. They believe the shooting may have been gang related. But the 3-year-old victim clearly was not the intended target.
"We're trying to get the guns off the street. There are too many weapons on the street in the hands of the wrong people," said Commander Eddie Johnson, Chicago Police.
Neighbors say it was a very dangerous situation. There were a lot of children outside when the shooting began.
"I have a 2-year old. She was out here five minutes before. And I have a newborn; it could have been my baby," said Tanya Williams, neighbor.
Marshaun waited in the hospital, but the family is encouraged that while he was in a lot of pain, he was conscious and talking.
"The baby, he was in good spirits when they took him. He really was," said Michelle Sellers, witness.
And the police have taken at least four people in for questioning. They declined to call any suspects.
Marshaun's mother is pregnant and receiving medical attention as well. She wasn't physically injured by the shooting.
Marshawn is in good condition and could go home today.

This is really sad that this innocent 3-year-old boy got caught up in the violence that is being a huge issue in Chicago. I feel terrible that he now has to deal with this injury, and that he was just being a good kid and playing outside when this happened. I think that something really needs to be done about this guns & violence issue that's been erupting lately in Chicago. It is becoming a bigger and bigger problem and I think that more police should be out patrolling the streets there, as well as a crackdown on guns being sold. Haven't enough young and innocent children been injured & killed by gunfire and violence?

Chicago Man Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver

Chicago man killed by hit-and-run driver
Monday, May 05, 2008 8:52 AM

CHICAGO -- Chicago police say a 36-year-old man died shortly after a hit-and-run accident yesterday on the city's South Side.
Officers say John Barnes was struck by a vehicle near East 85th Street and South Stony Island Avenue early yesterday morning.
Barnes was taken to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead about 45 minutes after the accident.
Officer John Mirabelli says police have found the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run and had a woman in custody, but no charges had been filed as of last night.
(Copyright ©2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

It is really sad to seem that someone just plowed into this man with their car and didn't even stop driving to see if he was ok or even call 911 for that matter. The driver basically left him to die, which he did.

People Stealing Manhole Covers??

Manhole Covers Among Latest Targets Of Thieves
Increase In Metal Thefts Could Be Another Sign Of Economic Downturn

OAK LAWN, Ill. (CBS) ― There has been a rash of thefts in south suburban Oak Lawn, and it's costing taxpayers lots of money. The targets are manhole covers, and police say it's the sign of a declining economy. CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports manhole covers weigh at least 125 pounds, and they're not easy to pry off. But since mid-March eight of them have been stolen, leaving gaping holes in alleys and streets. Police have no idea who's taking them, but they believe this is more than a prank. The thieves are stealing them for cash. "I thought I ran into a pothole, but now my car's been pulling to the right, like it needs to be realigned, so maybe that was it," said Oak Lawn resident Katie Livaich. Police say most have been snatched at night and likely taken to recyclers, who buy whatever comes their way. "I'd site the money and the fact that metal is going at an all-time high right now," said Oak Lawn Police Department Division Chief Michael Kaufmann. "We're seeing that in some other areas with aluminum theft from gutters to, now, manhole covers." It's getting so bad Kaufmann believes thieves even stole the guard rail off a Bishop Ford feeder ramp to make some money. But the thefts are not only a nuisance; they're dangerous, too. "There's a lot of young kids on this block and I wouldn't want them falling into this hole," said Oak Lawn resident Terry Reilly. But police say kids aren't the only ones who could be hurt by a missing manhole cover. An adult not paying attention, perhaps, could be harmed too. "If it's been in a the ground for a while you're probably going to need a tool to actually lift it out, but it's possible to stick your hands in those different grate openings and actually lift it up, but it would take somebody with some strength to do that," Kaufmann said. Kaufmann said each manhole cover costs about $150, but it costs about $240 to replace, with labor costs. So far the suburb is out several thousand dollars of taxpayer money.

http://cbs2chicago.com/local/manhole.cover.thefts.2.690023.html

I find it kind of weird that people are actually stealing these. I get it's for money, but who would actually pay for it, and what do they do with it? It's pretty sad how people steal just about anything now.

Slain Student Apparently Dialed 911; Help Not Sent

Police: Slain student apparently dialed 911; help not sent
By RYAN J. FOLEY Associated Press Writer
5:51 AM CDT, May 2, 2008
MADISON, Wis. - A college student apparently called 911 from her cell phone shortly before she was killed but a dispatcher hung up, failed to call back and never sent police to investigate, authorities said Thursday.Madison Police Chief Noble Wray said it was too early to know whether a better response could have prevented the April 2 slaying of Wisconsin-Madison student Brittany Zimmermann or helped police capture her killer.Authorities refused to release the content of the phone call, but Wray said it should have been enough for the Dane County 911 Center to take it seriously."It would be accurate to state that there is evidence contained in the call, which should have resulted in a Madison police officer being dispatched," Wray said at a news conference. "The 911 center did not call back to the telephone number, Madison police were not notified and no officer was sent."
Zimmermann, 21, was found slain in her apartment in an apparently random crime. Police believe someone broke into her apartment before killing her. They have not identified a suspect but have ruled out her fiance, who found her body in the apartment they shared.Dane County Public Safety Communications Director Joseph Norwick said the dispatcher who received the call from Zimmermann's cell phone inquired several times to determine whether an emergency existed. The dispatcher hung up after receiving no answer and then answered another 911 call that was waiting, he said. The dispatcher failed to call the number back as required under the department's policy, Norwick said.Norwick said he was investigating the incident and reviewing whether policies should be changed and employees should be disciplined. But he also said, "I don't think there's anything to apologize for at this time."

I think that the 911 dispatcher should have at least sent police to check on the incident, it might have prevented this girl from being killed.

Mortin High School not having the best of days.....

School bus driver, aide accused of threatening autistic students

Morton School District seeking another transportation company

The Morton School District said it is looking for a new company to transport its disabled students after a bus driver and an aide allegedly subjected autistic students to expletives and threats.

Worse, a school district spokesman said, the bus company put the two workers in another district after they served a six-week suspension.

"That's the part that rises to a level of 'What the hell are you doing?' " school district spokesman Dan Proft said. "That's a management decision. That's not just two bad actors."

The comments were tape-recorded after Berwyn parents suspected that their disabled children were being tormented on the bus operated by two employees of First Student Inc. of Cincinnati. They put a digital recorder in a child's backpack in January.

What came back was a recording laced with profanity and threats

"The way they were treated is beyond outrageous," Proft said. "Part of the outrage is that these are children who cannot functionally verbally communicate."

The parents notified the school district of the recording that month, Proft said. The district contacted First Student, which suspended the driver and aide for six weeks.

Afterward, the two were assigned to a new route, said Kimberly Mulcahy, a spokeswoman for First Student. She would not name the new district. Then, last week, the two were fired after the company acquired a copy of the recording, she said.

Though she said the company regrets that the driver and aide were allowed back to work after the suspension, she blamed the school district and parents for not providing the company with the recording. The district said it never had a copy of the recording. The parents could not be reached Wednesday.

"Based on the lack of evidence from our initial investigation, unfortunately, these people were allowed to return to work," Mulcahy said.

The Morton district has a $1.5 million contract with First Student to transport eight disabled students to a special-needs school in Chicago, Proft said. First Student, the nation's largest school bus company after acquiring Naperville-based Laidlaw last year, also transports students from extracurricular activities.

He did not know how long the district has contracted with First Student, but said it was looking for other companies to provide service.

Berwyn Police Chief William Kushner said police will meet Tuesday with the Cook County state's attorney's office, the parents of the special-needs students and bus company representatives to discuss whether the driver and aide will be criminally charged.

At issue, he said, is whether the audio recording violates the state's eavesdropping law, which mandates that a conversation be recorded with the knowledge of all parties. The children probably could not testify, he said.

"This is a conundrum for everybody," Kushner said. "If we don't have testimony, we're lost."

He said he wants the case to go before a judge.

"We've got special-needs kids involved who are victims," he said. "They deserve their day in court."

ECCB Theme Song

Due to the serious nature of this blog, I thought it would be good to add some humor. So turn on your speakers and listen to the EC Crime Busters Theme Song!

Poll Question?

On the left hand side of this blog, there is a poll. Please take time to think about how you feel about capital punishment. VOTE! Also, please leave comments here about your thoughts on this issue!

Defenders of capital punishment argue that it deters crime, saves taxpayer dollars for prison expenses and gives closure and justice to the families of victims. In Why the Death Penalty Works, author William Tucker contends that murder rates go down when executions increase. Mitt Romney argues that the science of DNA fingerprinting may actually make capital punishment more effective in Can You Build a Foolproof Death Penalty? The article Studies Say Death Penalty Deters Crime examines the results of a series of academic studies on the impact that the death penalty has on homicide rates.

Those who oppose capital punishment argue that it is as much a murder as the crime committed by the offender, that a life sentence is a greater punishment, that capital punishment does not deter crime, and that there is a risk that innocent people could be executed. The many facets of the argument against the death penalty are explored in Reasonable Doubts: The Growing Movement Against the Death Penalty. The author of 35 Years After Furman, Death Penalty Still Cruel, Unusual argues against the “disturbing use of capital punishment in America.” Resistance to Death Penalty Building Across U.S. acknowledges the growing “skepticism toward and resistance to the death penalty” after a number of wrongful convictions were uncovered in the late 1990s.

death threat at morton west

Today, my cousin called me and told me that there was some sort of death threat at her high school (Morton West). She heard that a note was found saying there would be more deaths than the columbine tragedy, and she didn't find this out until she went to school. The school still had classes though, but I guess the students were able to leave if they wanted to, which my cousin did. This is really scary because it can happen anywhere, also it is about 10 minutes from my house and the fact that my cousin goes there makes it worse for me to imagine. I think the school should have notified the students and staff and just cancelled classes for the day, because if there's any risk at all of some sort of danger to everyone, they should not even be allowed there. Here is the article:

CICERO, Ill. -- There is a heightened police presence Monday at two west suburban high schools as police investigate a threat made by a text message and possibly on a MySpace page. The schools -- Morton East High in Cicero and Morton West High in Berwyn -- are open and classes are being held, but "we've added police presence at both schools," Cicero spokesman Dan Proft said. Police have also brought K-9 units to the schools and there will be an administrative locker search at the end of the school day, Proft said. "School is proceeding, just with heightened security." Students are not being allowed into the halls alone, for instance, he said. Nonetheless, if parents or students are concerned about safety, school officials are allowing students to take the day off. Proft said the investigation centers around a threat made via a text message "and perhaps MySpace." Police in Cicero and Berwyn "are working to identify the threat, the credibility level and who made those threats initially," Proft said.

Bank Robbery In Elmhurst

Updated 4/25: Schools locked down after bank robbery
April 25, 2008
By Jeff Danna
Several Elmhurst schools were locked down this morning after an armed robbery was reported at 10:30 a.m. at the Butterfield Road branch of Suburban Bank and Trust.
"We immediately locked down Bryan, Madison and Jackson (schools), which are the closest in proximity," said Marta Davy, president of the Elmhurst Unit School District 205 board.
Davy said District 205 schools were locked for about an hour after they received word of the robbery around 10:30 a.m.
Timothy Christian schools also were on lock-down, said administrative assistant Char Iwema. She said the schools' doors were locked after staff received word of the robbery at around 11 a.m. People entering and leaving the building were monitored, but students were not locked in their classrooms.
According to a press release from Elmhurst Police Chief Steve Neubauer, police could not find the robber after he fled the bank on foot.
The robber had been driving a maroon Toyota that had been reported stolen earlier in the day, the press release said. The Toyota was left at the bank, and the subject reportedly ran to a black, older-model compact car.
The suspect was described as a black male, 25 to 30 years old and 5 feet, 8 inches tall. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, dark jeans and light-colored gym shoes. The driver of the getaway car was described as a black male.
Timothy Christian librarian Judd Rinsema said he was in the bank when the robbery occurred between 10:30 and 11 and was interviewed by police when they arrived at the scene.
"I was at the counter, and I had just given my clerk a container of coins," he said. "I was on a cell phone with my wife and I heard yelling."
Rinsema said he ended his call and hit the floor when he realized he was the only person left standing.
"He (the robber) said, 'Everybody down and no one will get hurt," Rinsema said.
Rinsema said he noticed a handgun in the man's left hand as the robber rifled through the tellers' drawers and proceeded to the drive-through teller's station.
Police said the robber took an undetermined amount of cash.
The man did not harm the 20 to 25 people in the bank, but the incident was shocking all the same, Rinsema said.
"It happened so fast," he said. "It took me half the time I was in there to realize what was happening."
Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Federal Bureau of Investigations at (312) 421-6700 or the Elmhurst Police Department at (630) 530-3079.

This is insane that an armed robbery of a bank took place in Elmhurst. It sometimes seems like we're in our own little 'bubble' of protection against crime like this, living in such a nice suburb. But it's a good wake-up call to realize that you should always be alert to what's happening around you at all times. It's weird thinking that this actually occurred in our town because this is the kind of thing that you normally see in movies and wouldn't expect here.

"Man with gun arrested near schools" in Elmhurst

On April 16th in Elmhurst, a man was waiting for a bus and was illegally carrying a gun and misrepresented himself as a police officer by having a hat and badge. I don't understand how he got the badge or hat, but I'm glad the cops were able to arrest him. It's scary to think how anyone can just do that, especially since it is so close to our college campus.

Trucker cited in fatal crash at 'L' station

So this Friday I was at Loyola checking out the campus and I took the red line, because it connects directly to Loyola. As I was going home the train personal said that they were dealing with an emergency on Cermak and that the train wasn't going to go any farther than Grant. Well I got off at the next stop and had about a 3 mile hike to the 6 bus, but the point is they never tell you what these emergencies are....I guess because they don't want to scare you or cause a rush. So here's the article on what happened. I found this article from the Chicago Tribune Online. There is also a video for this so open up this link and watch it too.

The driver whose semitrailer truck went out of control, plowed through Friday's rush-hour traffic and slammed into the escalator of the Cermak-Chinatown Red Line "L" station, killing two people, was issued a traffic citation late Sunday, but police said the investigation into the accident is continuing.

Don Wells, of Metamora, Mich., was given one citation for negligent driving and was later released from custody, Chicago Police Officer John Henry said. Police said and Wells' driver's license indicate he is 64.

Wells exited off the Dan Ryan Expressway at Cermak Road and for an unknown reason did not stop, hitting people waiting at a CTA bus stop and those on the escalator at the train station. Two women were killed, and at least 21 others were hospitalized.

Wells, a driver for Michigan-based Whiteline Express, had been in police custody since Friday, and investigators were reviewing CTA surveillance tapes. Investigators said they were not sure if Wells was licensed to drive in Illinois. There were no indications drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, police said Saturday.

Eloisa Guerrero, 47, and Delisia Brown, 18, did not know each other but were victims of the same fate Friday when the crash took their lives. Guerrero was waiting at the bus stop and Brown was on the escalator when the truck struck the station.

Henry said further charges are possible against Wells, but that he would be released from custody pending further investigation.

Chicago Police Officers Shot & Killed a Criminal

CHICAGO (WLS)--Chicago police say officers shot and killed a man on the city's Southeast Side after he reportedly took three people hostage in a robbery attempt at an auto shop.

Officers were called to the parts store on South Ewing Avenue Saturday evening, and say that when they arrived, the suspect took the three people hostage.

The Hostage and Barricade team and SWAT responded, and the man, 24-year-old Rigoberto Lopez, reportedly fired several shots at officers, who returned fire and struck him fatally.

The incident was over by 2:30 a.m. No one else was injured.

Chicago Police Officer John Henry says the Independent Police Review Authority is investigating whether the shooting was within guidelines.

It's really scary when criminals take innocent people hostage like this guy did.  I think that he definitely deserved to be shot and killed for putting others lives into jeopardy

NIU Security

Threat prompts NIU to tighten security

Northern Illinois University is boosting security this week after threatening graffiti was found.School officials said the graffiti was found Monday, but university police concluded the threats don't warrant suspending classes. In an e-mail to students, the school urged students and faculty to "remain calm but vigilant and to report any information they might have about this threat to the campus police."In a statement, the school said it would not release details because "excessive media coverage of campus threats clearly contributes to their proliferation."The school evacuated its Health Services Building last week after a bomb threat was found on a handwritten note in a well-traveled stairwell. Campus police are investigating.
A former student killed five students in a lecture hall Feb. 14 before killing himself.

Columbine Anniversary

9th anniversary of Columbine shootings

(Bay News 9) -- Sunday is the ninth anniversary of the the Columbine High School massacre.

Students Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris rampaged their Littleton, Colo., high school.

They shot and killed 12 classmates and one teacher before turning their guns on themselves.

Here's a video from youtube on the shooting

http://youtube.com/watch?v=sRfP6U6TG6I

It really scares me every time this anniversary comes around because I'm always worried someone might try to carry on the legacy and recreate it somewhere else. Look at NIU, it's not like it was the next town over but it's still close. And it happened not on the anniversary but on Valentines Day. I think we have to work on gun control and it's a really controversial issue when it comes to politics but I don't think we need any more evidence than what we have: Calumbine, Virginia Tech, and NIU. I feel like we always have to wait until it's too late to actually start making a change.
